Previews Picks You Don’t Want to Miss: May 2017 Edition

The Diamond Previews magazine is something every comic book reader needs to contend with each month. It can be daunting to flip through the massive catalog to get a good grasp on what’s heading to the shelf in the coming months. It can be a bit like taking your vitamins, and if we put the effort into perusing Previews we’d have a better comic shop experience. Dark Horse, DC, IDW and Image all have their own color-coded section in Previews. Marvel even has their own designated insert. Those companies’ books are receiving ample coverage elsewhere. The goal of Comic Black Book’s “Previews Picks Not to Miss” series is to highlight comics or graphic novels coming from smaller publishers in the big green section of Previews. We want to do our part in giving a shout out to titles we’re excited about coming from publishers outside the Major-Five. This list will include manga. We have a lot of manga readers in our community. We believe manga is a vital part of comics and are equally deserving in being given attention.

Pre-orders are vital to not just comic book stores (so they know how to gauge interest in a title and adjust their order numbers accordingly), they are also the life blood of a series’ continued publication, especially with smaller publishing houses and creator own titles. The amount of copies for a given title printed is directly related to the numbers of pre-orders. This month, you’ll want to try to place your pre-orders at your local comic shop by May 26th 2017.

Oh! By the way, the titles mentioned are just the ones that stood out to us. If there’s a title you want to bring to the community’s attention, let us know in the comments section.

Without further ado, here’s the list of picks you don’t want to miss offered in the May 2017 edition of Diamond Previews:

MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS GN (NEW PRINTING)

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is a murder mystery, a family drama, a sweeping historical epic, and a psychological thriller about monsters, real and imagined. Set against the political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor. Rendered in a kaleidoscopically visual style, Emil Ferris’ draftsmanship echoes the drawing of Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Robert Crumb. This is a revelatory work of striking originality and will undoubtedly be greeted as the debut graphic novel of the year.
